CHAPTER 11

Reid

Big dark circles could be seen under Harper’s eyes causing her to look exhausted and unusually pale—as did vamps that hadn’t fed for a while—as she exited the interview room. “You okay, babe?”

“Yeah, I’m just a little tired and hungry. Did you bring me my muffin?” she asked, her green eyes wide with excitement. I tried unsuccessfully to suppress the smile on my lips, because I couldn’t deny she was adorable.

“You did feed yesterday, right?”

“Yeah, but for some reason it feels like it’s been a while,” she replied with a yawn before sitting down on a nearby chair to eat her muffin. That was odd; we could usually go days without needing to feed again. I tried not to worry, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more going on than I could see. I didn’t want to think she was hiding something, but I knew she was.

“Maybe we should get you some more blood too.”

“Hmmm…blood does sound delicious right now,” she said, practically moaning as she took another bite of her muffin. Instantly my blood rushed and my cock stirred, causing a sexy smile to appear on her lips; she knew exactly what I was feeling. “And yes, that too, but a little later.”

“So, how are you feeling about this Luke character?”

“Um…I’m not sure yet,” she answered honestly, finishing her muffin and picking up the hot chocolate I’d gotten for her. “He seems sincere in his responses; granted, this is the first time I’ve had to rely on my gut and not my ability to determine that, so who knows if I am right?”

“Do you think he killed Dr. Mallick?”

“No.”

“That was a quick response.”

“Well, I don’t think he did. What’s the motive? I believed him when he said they were friends,” she contended, shrugging her shoulders. I nodded, trusting her judgment; if she thought he was innocent, then I did too.

The director entered the interview room, looking pale and shaken.

“You okay, Ed?”

“I’ve got some information to share.”

“Okay,” I replied uneasily. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but something had him looking incredibly uncomfortable.

“It turns out Dr. Nakul Mallick died from the same poison as his friend, Dr. Dows. It appears that they likely ingested it on purpose. These aren’t the kinds of poisons that are just lying around in the general population. Someone has to know what they are doing in order to create them. In a search of his residence, Claude found that Dr. Mallick had printed out a series of emails about an unknown person trying to convince him to take a job in Europe. The emails seemed to start off innocently, but quickly became threatening. They are tracing the IP address on his computer now, and we checked a series of calls made to him from a burner phone. We’re trying to track down anything we can on it, but we all know burners are hard to trace. Interestingly, similar emails and phone call patterns seem to be present for Dr. Dows as well.
